What is the “Being Water Wise Is…” Art Contest?

The annual Art Contest is for 3rd-12th grade students attending schools in the District’s service area. Utilizing the theme “Being Water Wise Is…” students are given the opportunity to demonstrate their artistic abilities while learning about the importance of water in our lives.

The theme can be portrayed as wise and efficient water use inside and outside of the home, at school, in the community, in business and industry, in agriculture, and in recreation. The importance of clean and reliable water to public health has been made even more clear over the past few years. Additionally, climate change is stressing Southern California’s water supplies and we need to adapt. This theme of water conservation and stewardship should be reflected in the artwork.

How do I participate in the contest?

All 3rd-12th grade students are eligible to participate in the “Being Water Wise Is…” Art Contest with their class. Teachers can select up to 3 entries to submit for each of their classes.

Entries must be submitted to Walnut Valley Water District NO LATER THAN Friday, March 1, 2023, at 4:00 PM.

Hand-drawn and digital entries must be dropped off at WVWD’s Administration Building (back building) at 271 S Brea Canyon Rd., Walnut OR
Email sfu@walnutvalleywater.gov if you would like your entries to be picked up BEFORE the deadline
The “Contest Submission Form” must be completed and submitted with each classroom entry
All digital entries must be put on a USB drive

We cannot accept individual poster submissions from students. Teachers must submit student artwork as a class (MAX 3 ENTRIES PER CLASS).

What are the contest rules?

Artwork should be drawn on 12” X 18” or 8.5” X 11” size white poster board or white drawing paper that has no lines. Under or oversized artwork WILL NOT be accepted.
Digital artwork must be 3600px x 5400px size with 300dpi resolution.
Students who draw on digital notepads, drawing tablets, or graphic tablets must note that no photographs, television, or videos will be accepted.
Artwork must depict various conservation or waterwise uses:
a.      inside or outside of the home or school;
b.      in industries or businesses;
c.      in the environment (nature);
d.      in agriculture;
e.      in recreation; or
f.       cleanliness/proper hygiene
“Being Water Wise Is…” is the overall theme. A “short” water message must be written on the artwork (not necessarily the words water is life). The less text the better.
Artwork with misspelled words will not be selected.
Bold, bright, brilliant colors show up the best. Students may use the following art media: crayons, markers, pencils, paints, watercolors, chalk, cut paper, or fabric.
Artwork must be original (no traced, trademarked, or copyrighted characters, slogans, i.e., Disney Sponge Bob, Dora the Explorer, etc.) No repeat artwork from past years.
Walnut Valley Water District reserves the right to question or disqualify any artwork that is not the work of the student based on their age and grade level.

What happens after my artwork is submitted?

The District’s Board of Directors judges the poster entries based on originality, color, complexity, and theme. Student winners will be contacted by email, followed by an invite to attend the Recognition Ceremony in May.

The winning artworks are also submitted to the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California for further judging as entries in their calendar contest.

The winning posters are displayed on the District’s website and social media.
