Education Team Facilitates “Water Tower Challenge” STEAM Activity During National Engineers Week

February 27, 2023

Walnut, CA (February 27, 2023) – Walnut Valley Water District (WVWD) facilitated a hands-on STEAM activity, the “Water Tower Challenge”, to Walnut Valley Unified School District (WUSD) 4th and 5th-grade classes. Walnut Elementary School and Quail Summit Elementary School were selected in celebration of National Engineers Week.

Students were given the challenge to build a water tower that would deliver water to two buildings using basic household/classroom materials that were provided by WVWD. Utilizing the engineering design process, students learned how water towers work and the importance of a water engineer’s role in delivering safe drinking water to the community.

Founded by the NSPE in 1951, National Engineers Week (February 19 – 25, 2023) was created to ensure a diverse and educated engineering workforce by increasing knowledge of and interest in engineering and technology careers. Engineers Week is dedicated to raising public awareness of engineers’ positive contributions to the community by promoting the importance of technical education (math, science, and technology literacy) to motivate the next generation of leaders toward engineering careers.

In support of this mission, Walnut Valley Water District sponsors classroom STEAM learning opportunities and hosts an engineering internship as a part of its efforts to engage and recruit future leaders.
